EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ”UMAR JAWFU” (LEAD GUITARIST OF NIGERIAN ROCK BAND ”THREADSTONE”)

The Rock scene in Nigeria has been on a rapid rise as more and more fans are staying devoted to the art, although we still have less rock artists and bands in Nigeria we encourage that more people put their heads together and come up with something delightful speaking of the rock scene in Nigeria i wanna introduce y’all to a band we are all familliar with, a gospelcentric alternative rock band called ”THREADSTONE”

ThreadStone is a Christian rock band that came together in 2007 in Jos, Nigeria. The band desires to see a generation of youth who are raised through worship to serve their nation. They are signed into POPULAR HIPHOP STAR M.I’S RECORD LABEL ”LOOPY RECORDS”
.
Ladies and gentle men i have the lead guitarist of this incredible band with me lets welcome ”UMAR JAWFU” …. this was the interview i had with him earlier on…. !, ENJOY …

MR UMAR CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT YOU AND THE BAND?
Had no plans to do music . But i always saw myself on stage allover the world. a friend of mine played a guitar in church and i decided to play guitar too, this was nine years ago and i was attracted to rock music, so i went into rock music, played with and for diffrent people in Jos like Daps, Jerimiah gyang, Jude abaga aka M.I, jesse jags, Ruby e.t.c I was a part of many bands in jos  and through that i developed myself in playing guitar, so i wrote songs for my church mainly and they loved some and hated most lol. But it was a learning process for me.
chei i don’t keep dates in my head oohhhh i suck at that . anyway the original line up is

  • AJAY KAFANG . GUITAR/ VOCALS
  • CHARLES ”FISTY” UDEH. BASS/KEYBOARDS AND PRODUCER
  • UMAR JAWFU. GUITARS AND DANCING
  • EDACHE EJOGA. DRUMS AND SERIOUSNESS .LOL.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU INTO ROCK MUSIC AND GUITAR PLAYING?
A friend called ”DOOTER MALU” inspired me to play guitars. Rock music chose me . i just flowed into it . i couldnt have it any other way.

 HOW DID THREADSTONE COME ABOUT?
We wanted to share our songs with people and make it a career. so we started without drums or bass just two acoustic guitars…. we were called AJAY AND FRIENDS… Then we came up with SCARLET THREAD.. had our first E.P … we had other bands, books with the same name so we changed it to THREADSTONE .. Our assignment is primarily the church and hopefully branch out to those who are seeking GOD.

HOW HAS BEEN WITH THE BAND TALKING ABOUT CHALLENGES, VICTORIES, JOYS AND SORROW?
Its a bloody minefield. we all have issues and struggles and we just depend on God to help us through it all. we thank God for the victories. and as he promised he will use everything for his glory. he’s preparing us for what he has prepared for us.

WHY DID THE BAND CHOOSE ALTERNATIVE ROCK AS THE MAIN GENRE? OR PERHAPS DESCRIBE THE MUSICAL SCENARIO YOU PORTRAY?
Its a mix of Cold play, Hillsong, 30 SECONDS TO MARS, AND SEETHER put together. And a touch of Afro beats…which will be a major feature in the new album.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE BAND’S FULL LENGTH ALBUM TITLED ”MIRACLE FOR A LOST CITY”?
It was inspired by the religious crisis in Jos.. where we were staying.. so we wanted to make a statement that peace starts with me.. not trying to change people but changing myself.

WHATS THE LATEST ON THREADSTONE.. WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM THE BAND?
More music.. Good music.. we are working on our new album .. New stuff and writers block don start to dey catch us.. FISTY has been puttimg down some beats , Ive been writing lyrics. Ajay has been writing lyrics too. so we’re putting things together and see what comes out of it.

OF RECENT WE HAVE WITNESSED A RAPID GROWTH OF ROCK MUSIC IN 9JA ..DO YOU THINK IT HAS COME TO STAY OR NOT?
I really believe it will prevail. and i’m excited to see and hear of new rock bands that are coming up in 9ja , not everybody will like it . but they are potential fans out there that want rock music i love other genres Naija has produced. but i know rock music will mark its spot and take its place in the nigerian music industry.

I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW YOUR TOP 5 BEST BANDS AND TOP 5 WORST?

AND FINALLY WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO YOUR FANS OUT THERE?,AND ALL ROCK LOVERS, UPCOMING ACTS NATIONWIDE/WORLDWIDE?
Don’t give up. do what you love. Be yourself and the right people will come to you. this is from my experience . there will be someone who is looking for something fresh. if you have it that person will take you there. but be humble , take responsibility, admit your mistakes, charge what needs to be charged and move on. get character. it is very IMPORTANT
