AI: When and why did you start playing?

Van666: I started playing guitar at age 12. I grew up in a musical house. My dad played the guitar and loved music so it was only a matter of time before I picked up the guitar too.

AI: How do you balance your music with your other obligations?

Van666: Very carefully ha ha ha! It is all about careful planning and time management. I also have a very supportive and understanding wife and children who support my music.

AI: Any advice to the beginners who might be nervous?

Van666: Playing in front of people can be very nerve wrecking. So make sure that the band has rehearsed enough and know the songs very well. Double check that all your gear is in good working condition and that you’ve packed in everything you’ll need for the show. Always put on new strings before each show and make sure you have a backup guitar for just in case you snap a string during a song. Know that you will make a lot of mistakes in the beginning but the more you play live the better it will get. Never stop a song when you make a mistake. Rather try and fix it while you are playing. Personally I like to have a good warm up session before a show to get me in the zone and to loosen my fingers. And remember always have fun!

AI: I would love to know do you get nervous before a public performance?

Van666: I still get excited before every performance. It is such an adrenaline rush!

AI: How is the Rock music scene fairing and what can you say may be the future in Africa?

Blood Beast-0270 Sign

Van666: The Metal/Rock/Alternative scene in South Africa is alive and well, but is mostly enjoyed by the minority of the population. There are a lot of really good bands but only a handful of venues that support Metal. We all do it for the passion as there is no money in it especially in the Metal scene. The future looks bright as there are a lot more international bands touring South Africa. So local bands get to open for them which is great. What would be really amazing is if international record labels and promoters would take notice of the South African Metal scene and invest in Metal bands/musicians and bring our music to the rest of the world.

AI: Meaning behind the band name?

Van666: Think of the BloodBeast as a mythological creature, demigod or demon that feeds on human depravity, suffering, brutality, violence, hatred, revenge etc.
