Yes, RAGE!!! That’s one of the things that makes rock and metal so AWESOME. Their ability to express anger in its RAW, UNFILTERED form. AUDITORY VIOLENCE!!!!
Over the years I’ve heard all sorts of things about rock music: It’s evil, its loud, I can’t hear jack (and this was rock not metal…HA! If only they knew). It sounds so angry and violent.
I have different views on these, but one thing I agreed with was the anger.
Like the first time I heard this song:
I was going through my cousin’s iPod (those really big ones from back in the day with the circle control thingy) and I see Finger Eleven. I’d seen the name in the credits of the English dub of “DRAGON BALL Z : LORD SLUG movie”(Which had a LOT of awesome songs…! topic for another time) so I gave it a listen. I was like “WOAH 0_0”. I loved it ’cause, at the time, I was going through stuff…You know how teenagers are. Anyway, that was how I discovered ANGRY MUSIC!!!!!
Then there was this one time my rap obsessed cousin who just happened to have the HYBRID THEORY album on one of his self-made CDs. I didn’t know it was HYBRID THEORY then, I just knew that there was DISTORTED ELECTRIC GUITARS WITH SCREAMING AND RAPPING (Which would explain why my cousin had the songs). In my play through, I stumbled upon PLACE FOR MY HEAD…Remember this part?
(from 2:00 Minute mark)
YUP! I WAS IN AWE! BLOWN AWAY! SUCH RAGE!!!
Ehem…sorry. Nostalgia much, I know.
Then in the past year, by that I mean the past 12 months. I found 2 songs that especially captured the idea of RIFF RAGE *Insert guitar lick here*
One was by DEMON HUNTER. You’d think a Metalcore band that does mostly screaming would ALWAYS SOUND ANGRY. I mean sure they do sound angry but they usually singing about all sorts of stuff….But last year they sang CROSS TO BEAR..!!
Sigh…..Good stuff that was.
Like that wasn’t rage enough, I sampled SLIPKNOT when I saw their name in a WATCHMOJO TOP 10 LIST OF MODERN METAL BANDS. I knew who they were. A friend from school always talked about them but their masks used to freak me out. However, now I’d sampled UnBlack Metal so I was sure I could take ’em.
Then….I find this song (PS: LOTS OF STRONG LANGUAGE! LISTEN AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION! OR JUST LISTEN AND BE SHOCKED. FOR THERAPEUTIC EFFECT, OF COURSE):
Okay, I’ve heard a number of angry songs. I can’t start writing about all of them. However, I gotta say, SLIPKNOT, to me, TAKE THE CAKE FOR RIFF RAGING WITH….THAT! I CAN FEEL THE ANGER IN EVERY WORD OF THAT CHORUS AS IT’S CHANTED. Man… Cory Taylor must have had a LOT of things going on to write a song like that.
Anyway, I just wanted to share me experience with the angry spectrum of the rock/Metal genre.
